    These EU-Central Asia cooperation projects have made a difference

    Have you ever wondered about the outcome of the many international STI cooperation projects the EU is involved in? So have the partners in the IncoNet CA project. They have compiled a list of noteworthy deliverables from EU-Central Asia cooperation projects that are available to the public: The related projects have e.g. made a significant contribution to development of national health standards; improved the quality of services in health facilities; trained young scientists in molecular diagnostics; researched infectious diseases; introduced of innovative methods of teaching; or developed sustainable land management practices.

    Conclusions of EU-Central Asia Policy Stakeholders Conference on 'Health' published

    On 16-17 May 2016, an EU-Central Asia Policy Stakeholders Conference (PSC) on 'Health' took place in Warsaw. The event was organised by the EU-funded IncoNet CA project as the third in a series of similar policy dialogue platforms. Earlier PSCs had tackled 'Climate Change' and 'Energy' issues. The aim of the latest conference was to take stock and showcase best practices regarding EU-CA scientific cooperation, discuss concrete innovation cooperation projects, and promote international collaboration, networking, and matchmaking. A new brochure sums up the discussions and presents the results of the event.

    Webinar with Coordinators of Projects supported by the IncoNet EaP/CA Twinning Grants

    The IncoNet EaP and IncoNet CA projects jointly organised two calls for twinning grants. A third call – targeting only the Eastern Partnership region – has been pre-announced for September 2016. The main objective of the twinning instrument is to increase the participation of Eastern Partnership and Central Asian countries in EU calls. In order to evaluate the effectiveness and usefulness of this funding instrument, the DLR Project Management Agency organised a short webinar session with coordinators of projects supported by the twinning grants on 27 July 2016.

    Success Story: The Twinning Grants

    Twinning has a long tradition in Europe as an efficient instrument in the capacity building process. It was successfully used in the building of the governmental capacities in the New Member States and afterwards it was inherited in many other areas (governmental institutions, municipal organisations, universities, schools etc.). Furthermore many FP7 NCP projects use twinning as an instrument to build capacities in other countries. The IncoNet CA consortium used this instrument to enhance EU-Central Asia S&T cooperation and to increase capacities on both sides.

    Innovation Training in Tajikistan

    The IncoNet CA project organised a 2-day Innovation Training in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on 14-15 June 2016. The seminar tackled basic questions such as 'What is Innovation?' as well as offered insights and advice on business models for international science, technology and innovation cooperation, responsible research, and intellectual property rights. The Forum was jointly organised by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic, the Central Asian Agency of Cooperation for Development (CAACD), and the Centre for Regional & International STI Studies & Support (CeRISS).

    EU-Central Asia Expert Group Meeting on 'Health'

    On May 20th 2016 an expert group meeting was conducted on the premise of the United Nations University in Bonn, bringing together scientific stakeholders from European and Central Asian countries to discuss both, the outcome of Health-related activities within the IncoNet CA and the thematic and methodological focus of future scientific cooperation between the EU MS/AC and Central Asia (CA) in the field of health. 16 experts from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, several EU countries (Austria, Germany, Portugal), the United Nations University as well as Turkey were present.

    Expert Group Meetings for Recommendations on EU-CA Science, Technology & Innovation Cooperation in 'Energy', 'Health' and 'Climate Change'

    The FP7-funded Projects IncoNet CA and IncoNet EaP organised a series of Expert Group Meetings. The meetings were part of an evaluation of the outcomes of the major activities in three topics, namely: Health, Climate Change and Energy, addressed by the IncoNet CA and IncoNet EaP projects. In addition, the Expert Group Meetings aimed to provide recommendations for the future of EU-CA and EU-EaP cooperation in these fields. To that purpose, one Expert Group Meeting for each topic was organised for each of the two target regions 'Eastern Partnership' and 'Central Asia', making it six workshops altogether.

    Three Webinars for NCP Structures in CA and EaP Countries

    The IncoNet EaP and IncoNet CA projects jointly organised a small series of webinars to enhance the capacities of Horizon 2020 National Contact Points in the Eastern Partnership and Central Asian Counries. The last webinar in this series focused on the 'Participant Portal', the single-entry point to interact with the Research Programmes of the European Commission, which offers tools to manage and monitor proposals and projects.

    This Policy Stakeholders Conference (PSC) organised by the IncoNet CA project addressed 'Health' as one of the societal challenges that are of mutual importance to Europe and Central Asia. Earlier PSCs had tackled 'Climate Change' and 'Energy' issues. The aim of the latest conference was to take stock and showcase best practices regarding EU-CA scientific cooperation, discuss concrete innovation cooperation projects, and promote international collaboration, networking, matchmaking. The event also provided an opportunity to present projects from the region as well as best practice examples.

    IncoNet CA session at the Healthy Aging Research Conference (HARC 2016)

    With the support of the IncoNet CA project 4 health experts from Cenral Asia took part in the 2nd Conference of the 'Healthy Aging Research Centre' project in Łódź, Poland on 11-13 May 2016. The conference aimed to provide a review of recent advances in the field of healthy and active ageing, and a forum to discuss  the gap between major scientific discoveries and patient benefits. A dedicated Central Asia satellite event provided the speakers from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan with an adequate platform to present their perpectives.

    English-Russian Online Glossary of Terms frequently occurring in International STI Cooperation Activities

    A glossary of terms frequently used in international science, technology and innovation cooperation, has recently been published by IncoNet CA partner InExCB-KZ (Independent Expert Consulting Board to Promote Scientific Research Activity in Kazakhstan). It lists frequently used terms in English and Russian, plus a short definition of the respective term in both languages.

    EU-Central Asia International Cooperation Barometer - Take part in our survey!

    The InoNet CA project is conducting a survey about the framework conditions and cooperation opportunities of STI in general and more particularly between the EU and the Central Asia countries. With the related questionnaire addressing the six countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan), we would like to measure the development of potentials of bi-regional Science, Technology and Innovation cooperation over time. Following the first round in 2015 the survey is repeated to get comparative data for analysis.

    Grant Scheme to facilitate the participation of CA/EaP countries in Brokerage Events - apply now!

    This grant scheme will financially support the participation of local researchers from Eastern Partnership and Central Asian countries in brokerage events and other similar activities related to Horizon2020 in the EU Members States or Associated Countries. The thematic priorities of the call are the three Societal Challenges, targeted by the project, namely Health, Energy and Climate Change. Maximun per grant is 3000 EUR.

    Under the support of the IncoNet Central Asia project, energy and water experts from Central Asia participated in 'AquaMatch Amsterdam', an international Water Technology & Innovation brokerage event. The event was organised by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency and the Enterprise Europe Network. AquaMatch took place at Aquatech Amsterdam during the Amsterdam International Water Week. From 3 - 6 November participants had access to the Aquatech Amsterdam exhibition, an extensive conference and workshop programme and various excursions.

    Central Asia session at Climate-KIC Innovation Festival 2015

    This year's Climate-KIC Innovation Festival was held in Birmingham on 28-30 October 2015. The three days of events included a wide variety of meetings and thematic sessions. The Innovation festival brought togeher over 300 participants from across Europe, including entrepreneurs, international business market leaders and European policy makers. This year a key festival objective was to showcase the community’s successes and focus on developing and growing in the future.

    A high-level policy workshop on EU-Kazakhstan Innovation Cooperation took place in Astana just after this year's EU-Central Asia Policy Stakeholders Conference. Among the speakers were Asset Issekeshev, Minister for Investment and Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and Cristina Russo, Director for International Cooperation at the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission. The Astana Workshop on 2 October 2015 was the fourth in a series of special conferences dedicated to 'European Union-Kazakhstan cooperation through innovation'.

    Experts’ visit to explore possibilities for cooperation in Horizon 2020

    The experts' visit took place in Tashkent on 19-20 June 2015 in the frame of the  IncoNet CA project. On 19 June the experts visited the Physical-Technical Institute SPA 'Physics Sun' of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences. SPA 'Physics-Sun' is a leading organisation for conducting basic and applied research in the field of solar energy. The Test Bed (Geliopoligon) of the Physical-Technical Institute of SPA 'Physics-Sun' is the main base of the testing site, where scientific-research, and pilot development works are being performed.

It has been involved in solving the problems of the industrial-innovative development of Kazakhstan and the modernisation of the economy. The 2nd edition of this forum-like event attracted nearly 300 stakeholders engaged in international science cooperation, scientific research or innovation.     Kick-off Meeting for the STI Policy Mix Peer Reviews of Armenia, Georgia and Kyrgyzstan

    On 22-23 January 2015, the Centre for Regional and International STI Studies & Support (CeRISS, Greece) and the Centre for Social Innovation (ZSI, Austria) organised a Kick-off Meeting for the S&T Policy Mix Peer Reviews of Armenia, Georgia and Kyrgyzstan in the framework of the IncoNet EaP and IncoNet CA projects. At the meeting, senior experts and policy-makers from the EU Member States and Associated Countries as well as high-level stakeholders from Armenia, Georgia and Kyrgyzstan specified the areas to be reviewed and set a time schedule for the on-site visits of the three expert panels in March/ April 2015.

    EU-Central Asia International Cooperation Barometer

    The InoNet CA project is conducting a survey about the framework conditions and cooperation opportunities of STI in general and more particularly between the EU and the Central Asian countries. With the related questionnaire, addressing the five countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan), we would like to measure the development of potentials of bi-regional Science, Technology and Innovation cooperation over time. The survey will be repeated after 15 months to get comparative data for analysis.

    Grant Scheme to facilitate the Participation of Central Asian Countries in the ASEAN-EU STI Days 2015 in Paris

    This grant scheme will financially support the participation of local researchers from Central Asian countries in the ASEAN-EU STI Days 2015, on 17-19 March 2015, in Paris (http://www.stidays.net/). The thematic priorities of the call are the two Societal Challenges HEALTH (more precisely Infectious Diseases or Chronic Lung Diseases) and ENVIRONMENT (Water-Energy-Food Nexus or Water Management under Climate Uncertainty).     Participation of Central Asian researchers in the SET-Plan Conference and visit to the ENEA Research Centre

    The IncoNet EaP and IncoNet CA projects promote international STI cooperation and research policy dialogue between the EU and its member states on the one hand, and the Eastern Partnership and Central Asia Countries on ther other. One of the projects' tasks is to collaborate with EU Innovation Platforms. In this context the Agency for the Promotion of European Research (APRE) organised the participation of innovative EaP and CA energy researchers in the 2014 SET Plan Conference. The event was held in Rome on 10-11 December under the auspices of the Italian Presidency of the European Union.

    Workshop on the 'Enterprise Europe Network' held in Uzbekistan

    The Indo-Uzbek Center for Promotion of Science and Technology Cooperation held a workshop about the Enterprise Europe Network on 28 October at the Miran International Hotel in Tashkent. Representatives of the European Union, young scientists from research institutes and experts of SMEs from Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan, participated in the event. The aim of the Workshop was to reflect successful examples of cooperation of Central Asian (CA) countries with the Enterprise Europe Network and to propose ways to extend the network in CA countries.

    Regional Training for Central Asian NCPs held in Istanbul

    A training activity for National Contact Points (NCPs) in Central Asian countries was organised by TÜBİTAK in Istanbul on 12-13 March 2014 under Task 4.3 'Promotion of Horizon2020' of the IncoNet CA Project. 14 NCPs from 5 Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenisatan and Kyrgyzistan) and 4 trainers attended the event. Representatives of experienced EU MS/AC NCPs gave presentations about the role of National Contact Points within 'Horizon2020', the EU's current framework programme for research and innovation. Active participation of the trainees were promoted by organising group activities.
